Product Details

Our throw pillows are made from 100% spun polyester poplin fabric and add a stylish statement to any room. Pillows are available in sizes from 14" x 14" up to 26" x 26". Each pillow is printed on both sides (same image) and includes a concealed zipper and removable insert (if selected) for easy cleaning.

Artist's Description

Traditional mats woven from sun-dried pandanus leaves are a constant feature of my life as a member of a Fijian household. Starting with the layers of large, brightly-fringed mats piled up as ceremonial gifts at our wedding feast years ago, our Fijian mats are part of the rhythm of life here, coming and going as valued cultural symbols, presented, received, treasured, and passed on again at a never ending cycle of funerals, births, marriages, home-comings, and other celebrations that connect our extended families. Each mat is a labour of love, representing hours and hours of work by the patient, creative hands of grandmothers, aunts, and sisters. The woman who has many such finely woven mats in her home is considered wealthy and blessed.

Our mats are used for the mundane as well as the ceremonial � we eat on them, sleep on them, use them for picnics, for sunning out bedding, for the baby to play on� The mats that cover our living room floor are laid out...

The Fiji Islands are my home, and source of inspiration, as I use dyes, paint, barkcloth, sand, silk and cement to respond in my own creative way to the challenges, tension, and beauty of life in a developing Pacific island nation. Sea changes can have surprising effects: since leaving behind all that was familiar in my American/German upbringing, to build a life here in my husband’s homeland two decades ago, my art has taken on dynamism of its own… My work is awash with the intense, vibrant colors of the tropics, and my themes are often an exploration of Fiji’s stunning natural environment and rich cultural heritage. Traditional barkcloth crafted by women from my mother-in-law’s island village often serves as my canvas. Steeped...
