Maria, Love this bark cloth... would that be available to use for the project we discussed? What kind of paint are you using? Maybe rethink what materials we would need?

Thanks for your comment - yes, our traditional Fijian barkcloth (hand-made by the women in my mother-in-law's village) is wonderful stuff to paint on!

Artist's Description

This painting is one of a series inspired by watching my husband's rugby team practice traditional Fijian dances in our yard! 'Meke Ni Yaqona is a lively tribal dance performed by young men during welcome ceremonies in Fiji. Wearing grass skirts and leaves, the men leap, stamp, and turn in unison to the rhythm of traditional chants, as a ceremonial drink is prepared from yaqona roots. The energetic movements and exuberant spirit of this dance are portrayed using the earth tones of traditional Fijian masi kesa art.
I create Limited Edition Originals (hand-painted onto authentic barkcloth or silk) of many of my paintings. Contact me by using the artist e-mail link on this page to place your order directly.

Sea changes can have surprising effects: since leaving behind all that was familiar in my American/German upbringing, to build a life here in my husband’s homeland two decades ago, my art has taken on dynamism of its own… My work is awash with the intense, vibrant colors of the tropics, and my themes are often an exploration of Fiji’s stunning natural environment and rich cultural heritage. Traditional barkcloth crafted by women from my mother-in-law’s island village often serves as my canvas. Steeped...
