The traditional Fijian barkcloth I paint on is made by women in a small island village that is the ancestral home of my husband’s maternal relatives. A renewable resource, this textured, fibrous paper is hand-crafted by harvesting strips of bark from specially grown tropical mulberry trees. Each piece takes days to produce, involving a process of pounding, soaking, drying and stretching. These traditional skills are passed on from generation to generation, with certain clans being considered the experts in barkcloth making.
