Description
My two daughters wander through this painting, leaving a trail of footprints, big and small. What will life be like for them, children of the Pacific, born into a century of change and tension, finding their way through a world shaped by both the new and the old, by beauty and danger, opportunity and disaster? Timeless volcanic peaks looming out of the ocean, island home, source of life, familiarity, tranquillity. Beyond them, vast horizons: they are children of Planet Earth too! Identity rooted in tradition with its symbols: A whales tooth: cementing relationships, signifying respect and honour, a conch shell: bearing good news and bad, calling the people back together again, printed barkcloth: fabric of life, organic fibres beaten and smoothed by the rough hands of working women, decorated with rhythmic patterns from days of old Will the foundations we have offered them be enough to see them through? May warm Pacific winds blow gently on your journey, children of my heart.

I find one of the most awesome experiences I can have as an artist is when complete strangers connect with one of my paintings, when something I have tried to convey resonates with another human being... Thank you Nina!
